Using desktop Zoiper 5 free for linux. When I get an incoming sms, a small orange balloon appears in the gui, but I would like something more noticeable, maybe with a sound as well. Any way to get this?

Depending on the desktop environment that you use, this notification may look different. We use libnotify for the notifications. How they will be shown or handled depends on the DE.
